SUMMARY

Vladimir Karatkevich (1930–1984) was one of the greatest writers of Belarus. He was the novelist with a broad spectrum of interests, best known as author of historical novels, but he was also a playwright, screenwriter, literary critic, historian, translator and poet. He was born in Orsha on Witebszczyzna, he studied in Moscow and Kiev. In his poetry and prose Karatkevich tried to awake national and historical self-consciousness of the Belarusians. Belarusian folklore, folk tales and legends of the Belarusian people have become canvas for many of his works. He is considered by many of his countrymen as one of the national Belarusian poets.
